Low Cholesterol Foods or Low Fat Foods?
January 16, 2012
When we are told we need to reduce our blood cholesterol the temptation is to avoid foods that are high in dietary cholesterol such as eggs, prawns, and kidney.
However, dietary cholesterol actually has very little impact on blood cholesterol; this is far more affected by foods that contain saturated fat.
Rather than looking just for low cholesterol foods, look out for foods that are low in saturated fat. This means avoiding foods such as processed meat, meat pies, sausages, fatty cuts, butter, cream, hard cheese, cakes and biscuits, and coconut or palm oil.
As well as avoiding foods that are high in saturated fat, low cholesterol foods you should include in your diet are fruits and vegetables, and high fibre foods such as oats, beans, lentils and chickpeas, which will help to reduce the amount of cholesterol in your blood.
Low fat foods rather than low cholesterol foods are the key to getting your cholesterol down to a healthy level.
