It can be difficult to maintain healthy cholesterol diets for you and your family if you are working full time. You are going to be on the go all the time. When packing your lunch, or even your supper it is very easy to included the wrong types of food for your meals on the go. If you want to be careful about what your family eats by choosing healthy low cholesterol diets and reducing the cholesterol in your diet, there are many food types you can choose from that have an enjoyable taste.

Tips for a low cholesterol diet

When preparing a meal do not fry your food in oil or grease. The healthiest way to prepare your food is to broil or steam whenever possible. If you broil your meats instead of frying them, you will lose some of the fat that is on the meat instead of it sitting in its own fat and oil whilst being cooked.

If you boil vegetables you will lose some of the flavor and nutritional value in the water whereas if you steam cook the vegetables most of the goodness will stay in the food. Much of the taste and nutritional value is also lost in the juice of canned vegetables.

Fresh vegetables is the ideal choice but if that is not possible for whatever reason frozen vegetable may be an alternative though some people believe the nutritional value is not the same.

The skin of chicken is very high in cholesterol so you may prefer to buy skinless chicken.

Attempting to balance your diet to reduce your cholesterol levels is not dissimilar to dieting. It takes will power and self discipline.

Watching the amount of fat and counting the calories especially when you are about to sit down and enjoy a special dinner.

A low cholesterol diet when eating out….

When you are going out to eat, there are ways to watch what you are eating. Try to avoid choosing fried, braised, crispy, au gratin, pan-fried, escalloped, sautéed foods. Suitable alternatives would be broiled, steamed, baked, poached, grilled or even roasted. A useful tip and it will probably impress the waiter, ask what method is used to cook the food.

These days because of competition many restaurants try to provide a personal service and if what you want is not on the menu just ask if they will prepare it.

In addition to fatty foods you should also avoid salt or food such as rich sauces that will have sodium [salt substitute] added.

Healthy tips for low cholesterol diets….

A good place to start especially with packed lunches is to cut out or at least reduce the amount of white breads and white rolls you eat. Whole grain breads such as wheat and rye will certainly help you to lower your cholesterol.

It is very difficult to change your eating habits and gradual changes are probably better than trying to change your lifestyle over-night. Many of us find it very difficult to cut out red meat from our meals. Make a start and include white meats more often instead of red. Avoid buying meats that are high in fat. Look for meats with the fat trimmed and skinless chicken [poultry]. Using whole grain breads and cutting up leftovers will give you a great packed lunch any day of the week. A low cholesterol diet doesn’t mean bland tasting food.

Snacking and low cholesterol diets….

There is always the temptation to have a quick snack in the office or when you are working late. This usually results in something like chocolate or chocolate covered biscuits or sweets. Be prepared and consider alternatives that are high in fiber, lower in fat and low in cholesterol.



How about light popcorn or unbuttered, rice cakes are a great idea and so are low fat pretzels that you can eat anywhere. Frozen yogurt bars, cereal bars, dry cereals, fruit bars, and juice bars or skim milk ice cream.

Don’ forget fresh fruits and veggies you can take with you anywhere. Strawberries, grapes, raisins, pineapples, and apples, or oranges. Look for dried fruits or sliced fruits for that snack at your desk.

You can reduce your cholesterol with a little self discipline and continue with high fiber and fresh foods that make up the best overall low cholesterol diets. Try different things like fresh broccoli or fresh cauliflower for a great addition to any snack or meal.
